Canon Pixma MG3050 annoying margins on 4x6'' photo

Jul 21, 2017

Hi, for the past 3 days I have been wasting tons of ink and paper trying to get rid of the big margins when printing a 4x6 photo.

Here is what I get in a preview:

I just want to print a normal photo on the whole photo page, without any white spaces...

Please help me,

Thanks.

Set it for borderless

Click that Options... link the the bottom right of the print dialog box. If you get a Print Settings dialog box, click the Printer Properties... link. In the next dialog box, make sure the Borderless Printing check-box is checked. Then hit OK, hit OK, and hit Print.

You either have to crop to make it borderless or have a border.  The image isn't a 2:3 ratio so it won't fit perfectly on a 2:3 ratio paper.

Newbie question ...

does choosing borderless printing actually spray a little ink inside the printer

because it has to print to the edge of the photo paper.

You either have to crop to make it borderless or have a border. The image isn't a 2:3 ratio so it won't fit perfectly on a 2:3 ratio paper.

In the OP's screen capture, the check-box for "Fit picture to frame" is checked. When printing on 4x6 inch paper, checking that box will cause cropping a 4:3 picture to 3:2, and therefore not leave any white margins (as long as the printer is set to print borderless).

Yes, printing borderless sprays some ink into the printer guts.

Yes. How much varies by printer model, and on some models, by settings. I tested two popular printers. I found that when printing borderless, one sprayed about 4.5% of the ink off the paper, and the other sprayed, depending on settings, between 0.2% and 4.7% of the ink off the paper. See my thread starting at https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59779918.

Wow ... that was some serious testing.

Thank you !

You're welcome. But I didn't answer (and can't answer) the ultimate question: how much does it matter? How much of a problem is that oversprayed ink likely to be? I don't know, and don't know of anyone who has what I'd call a well-informed opinion. All I've seen are theories and suppositions. My guess is much depends on how much borderless you print, how often, and what printer you're using.

It appears that your picture is not in the 3:2 aspect ratio. It's probably in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Note that a 6"x4" print is in the 3:2 aspect ratio (6/2=3 and 4/2=2).

Therefore if your entire photo is to be printed without cropping off any parts of it, there will be blank space on one or both sides.

If you print your picture using the borderless print option for your printer, a bit of the top and bottom of you picture will be cropped off but the sides will fill the paper with no blank spaces. (Note that when printing a 6"x4" borderless print, about 1/32" or 1/16" will be cropped off both sides due to over spray to achieve borderless printing.)

Since your picture is of a cityscape, you could actually change the aspect ratio by forcing it to be in the 3:2 aspect using your photo editor. This will distort the picture by making it wider than it should be but with a cityscape, no one will know the difference. After changing your picture to the 3:2 aspect ratio, it would then completely fill a 6"x4" print using the borderless print option, with just overspray cropping of the top and bottom. --- If your photo had people in it or things that should be round, then changing the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 3:2 would not be recommended since people would look fatter and balls would look oval.

The key to changing the aspect ratio is to resize your image with the "constrain proportion" unchecked. Then the simple way is to enter 1800 pixels for the width and 1200 pixels for the height and print your picture at 300 ppi. (You could have larger pixel values but for now, just use 1800 x 1200 pixels and your 6"x4" picture will look just fine.

Ok, but it appears to be a different ratio with the box checked.

I don't have such setting. I've tried to look for a Border setting but without any luck...

So then what do I have to do ? How do I set the printer to print borderless?

Sorry, you can't print borderless

I thought that all or pretty much all current inkjet printers that can print photos on sheets of photo paper can print borderless. But it turns out that the MG3050 cannot.

First, where are you, and how did you get this printer? Because I see you asked Canon USA, and they told you they don't support this model (http://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Printer-Multifunction-Support/Printing-4-x6-photo-on-MG3050/m-p/214502). So depending on where you bought it / how you got it, you may want to return it and demand a refund--it appears to be 'gray market'.

Second, Canon Europe tells us that this model does not print borderless. ""PRINTER SPECIFICATIONS ... Borderless Printing Not available"" See https://www.canon-europe.com/printers/inkjet/pixma/pixma_mg3050_series/specification.aspx.

Hi, I'm currently in holiday in Romania and I got this printer from a big/national electronic store here (http://altex.ro). I got the cheapest printer as I only needed it to print my holiday pictures. If it doesn't print borderless, is there a way to reduce the borders as much as possible? Because that right part of the photo which has a big border (about an inch) is really annoying...

Thanks.

Normally if you choose "Full page photo" there are two sets of options: (1) borderlesss or not, except that your printer will not print borderless, and (2) cropping parts off the picture to fill the printable area, or resizing the picture so that all of it fits within the printable area. In your original post, you had the "Fit picture to frame" box checked, which should have filled all of the printable area with the picture, like this:

In which case the non-printed area should be small. If the picture's proportions don't match the printable area and you do not check the "Fit picture to frame" box, you get this:

Notice the extra sky above the penguins' heads and their feet not being cut off--but extra white space at right and left.

My guess, based on the surprising things I've learned about the MG3050, is that your initial settings were all correct to print on as much of the paper as possible. Now I suspect that the MG3050 not only cannot print borderless, but also has a relatively large non-printable area.

Then, is there any way to edit the non-printable area? Because the large border is on the right side, so my guess would be that I can edit it, and leave a small border around the whole picture, because the other 3 sides have a small border... I don't even know how to explain this, but is there a way to edit the border setting from the printer?

Probably not, and if there is, I don't can't think of what it would be. Canon USA is not going to support the MG3050, but try asking Canon Europe.

It is actually common for printers to have different borders top and bottom (as the paper moves through in portrait mode). For example, with the Canon Pro-100, unless you print borderless, the usual borders on photo paper are 3mm at the top and 5mm at the bottom. The one on the MG3050 looks surprisingly large; in your screenshot, the bottom border looks like about 15mm.

It doesn't matter what aspect ratio the picture has or how I edit it, it will still stretch or crop to fit that same area of the paper, which leaves the borders including that big annoying one....

Definitive answer: CAN'T do it

Okay, look at the MG3050 manual, from the Canon Europe website (http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300025169/01/MG3000ser_OnlineManual_Win_EN_V01.pdf). At p. 117, it says, "Printable area, Top margin: 0.12 inch (3.0 mm), Bottom margin: 0.66 inch (16.7 mm), Left margin: Letter/Legal: 0.26 inch (6.4 mm), Other sizes: 0.14 inch (3.4 mm), Right margin: Letter/Legal: 0.25 inch (6.3 mm), Other sizes: 0.14 inch (3.4 mm)". Remember that in landscape (horizontal) orientation, bottom becomes right. So Canon itself is telling us that on 4x6 inch / 10x15 cm / A6 paper in landscape orientation, the minimum right margin is 0.66 inch i.e., 16.7mm.

In the USA Canon sells the MG3020 as a very similar or identical model, and it's the same story from Canon USA support (page https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/mg-series-inkjet/mg3020-bk?tab=manuals#Z7_MQH8HIC0L88RB0AMD0F1Q42K25, manual at http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300025169/01/MG3000ser_OnlineManual_Win_EN_V01.pdf).

And the image's aspect ratio (4:3 versus 3:2) had nothing to do with it: the OP's initial post showed the "Fit picture to frame" box checked--and also an image of about a 1.41:1 aspect ratio.
